Your zodiac sign is your sun sign: where the Sun was when you were born. But the Moon was in a sign too, and in astrology that moon sign describes your emotional world: how you feel, what you need to be at peace, and how you love.

Why your birth time matters

The Sun spends a month in each sign, but the Moon moves much faster: it changes signs every two and a half days or so. On many days, the Moon started in one sign and ended in another.

If you don’t know your birth time, that’s fine. Leave it blank and we’ll tell you whether the Moon changed signs that day, and at what time. If it didn’t, your moon sign is certain.

How we calculate it

We convert your local birth time to universal time using your birthplace’s time zone and the daylight saving rules in force on that date. Then we calculate the Moon’s position from astronomical ephemerides, in the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. Everything happens in your browser: your birth details are never sent or stored.
