Rising Sign Calculator: Find Your Ascendant
If people have ever told you “you don’t seem like a typical Scorpio”, your rising sign is probably why. It’s the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. In astrology, your rising sign (or ascendant) is how you present yourself to the world, the first impression you make, and the front door to your birth chart.
What you need
- Your date of birth.
- Your time of birth, as exact as possible. It’s usually on your birth certificate.
- The city where you were born. If your town isn’t on the list, pick the nearest large city: the difference is tiny.
The rising sign changes about every two hours, so the time matters most. If you were born close to a sign change, the calculator will let you know.
How we calculate it
We convert your local time to universal time using your birthplace’s time zone and the daylight saving rules in force on that date. Then we work out the local sidereal time and find the point of the (tropical) zodiac that was crossing the eastern horizon. We check the result against an independent sky-position calculation. Everything happens in your browser: your birth details are never sent or stored.
Your big three: Sun, Moon and rising
- Your Sun is your core: who you are and where you’re headed.
- Your Moon is your inner world: what you feel and what you need.
- Your rising sign is your front door: how others see you and how you start things.
Together they’re the most useful summary of your birth chart, so the calculator shows all three, plus your Midheaven, the point of your chart tied to your calling.
Frequently asked questions
What is a rising sign?
The zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the time and place of your birth.
Can I find my rising sign without my birth time?
Not accurately. All twelve signs rise over the horizon in a single day. If you don’t know your time, try our moon sign calculator: the Moon only changes signs every two and a half days.
Why does another site give me a different rising sign?
It’s almost always the birth time or daylight saving time. Check that the time matches your birth certificate and that the city is right.
Does my rising sign change over time?
No. Your natal rising sign stays the same for life.
